Buyer-Journey Citation Mapping
A diagnostic routine that maps the brand's citation surface across the actual buyer journey — where buyers ask, what the answer engines return, where the brand is and is not surfaced.
Purpose
Replace the legacy keyword-rank dashboard with a working map of where the brand is and is not present across the actual answer-engine-mediated buyer journey, so the GEO program can prioritize the queries that matter.
Outcomes
- Mapped buyer journey with query clusters
- Citation-rate baseline per cluster
- Prioritized GEO work list aligned to the journey
Tools and agents
Steps
Map the buyer journey
The buyer-journey research agent produces a working map of the journey the brand's buyers actually take — discovery, evaluation, validation, decision — grounded in interviews, win/loss data, and observed behavior.
Construct the query set per stage
The query-set construction agent produces a set of the actual questions buyers are asking at each stage, grouped into clusters.
Measure citation rate per cluster
The citation-rate panel samples answer-engine responses across the query set and produces a baseline per cluster. The output surfaces which stages are well-covered and which are not.
Synthesize and prioritize
The synthesis agent produces a ranked work list — which clusters to work on first, what the expected effect is, what the implied content production looks like. A senior practitioner reviews and edits.
Hand off to the GEO production line
The output of this routine becomes the input to the GEO Content Production Line routine, which produces the content that addresses the prioritized clusters.
Antipatterns to avoid
- Building the query set without the buyer-journey grounding (produces a content list that doesn't follow real buying behavior)
- Treating citation rate as the only metric (it's a leading indicator, not a destination)
Glossary terms used in this workflow
- Answer Engine — A large-language-model interface that returns a synthesized answer rather than a ranked list of links.
- Routine — A named, repeatable agentic workflow that a team can invoke on demand.
