An answer engine is a large-language-model interface that returns a synthesized answer rather than a ranked list of links. Examples include the major chat assistants and the answer-mode features inside the consumer search engines. Answer engines are increasingly where high-intent informational queries are resolved — buyers research vendors, marketers research workflows, executives research categories — which is what gives generative engine optimization its commercial weight.

The structural difference between an answer engine and a traditional search engine is the unit of success. A search engine returns links; success is measured by position on the results page. An answer engine returns a synthesized response; success is measured by inclusion as a cited source inside the response itself, and secondarily by the position and context of that citation. The two metrics are not the same, and the practices that move them are only partially overlapping.

The most consequential operational change for marketing teams is that the page they used to optimize for — the search engine results page — is being supplemented and partially replaced by a surface they cannot see directly. Citation rate becomes a measured KPI. Entity-anchored SEO becomes more important than keyword-anchored SEO. The corpus that answer engines train and ground on becomes a serious distribution surface. And the dark-funnel problem — the buyer journey that happens in venues the marketing team cannot observe — gets meaningfully larger.
