Topical authority is a brand's or a publication's perceived expertise within a defined topic cluster, as measured by the search and answer engines that index the surrounding web. A long-standing SEO concept, topical authority has been re-weighted upward in the GEO era because answer engines are more likely to cite sources with deep, coherent coverage of a topic than sources with one-off content on that topic.

The practical work to build topical authority looks different in the GEO era than it did in the keyword-SEO era. The corpus needs to be coherent rather than merely large. The internal linking needs to express the topic structure rather than chase keyword-position. The cross-referencing from independent sources matters substantially more than it did. And the brand's representation as an entity in the underlying knowledge graph is now an inseparable part of the topical-authority work, because answer engines resolve topics through entities and entities through their citation neighborhoods.

Marketleaf's editorial coverage of topical authority focuses on the operational reality of building it rather than on the theoretical model of what it is. The teams that have built defensible topical authority in our category over the last two years did so by publishing consistently in a bounded beat with named bylines, by producing reference resources that other publications and answer engines can cite, and by accepting that the work compounds slowly. The teams that tried to short-cut it with programmatic content or thin keyword-stuffed pages mostly produced corpora the answer engines have learned to discount.
