Citation rate is the frequency with which a brand, page, or entity appears as a cited source inside answer-engine responses for a target query or set of queries. It is the emerging organic-visibility metric for the GEO era — the closest analog to the keyword-position metric of the SEO era, but with different underlying mechanics and a different interpretation.

The practical measurement has three components. First: the query set — the population of questions you want to be cited for. A serious GEO program defines its query set in writing and revisits it quarterly. Second: the citation count — the number of responses across the query set in which your brand or pages appear as a cited source. Third: the citation context — whether the citation appears in a position of authority (primary source, definitional reference) or as one of several supporting links, and whether the context of the citation is favorable or merely accurate.

Measurement tooling is still maturing. Several vendors offer panels that sample answer-engine responses for a defined query set and report citation counts back; the data is directionally useful and not yet of the precision that paid-search tooling offers. The right posture is to treat citation rate as a real metric, to invest in measuring it as best the tooling allows, and to assume the measurement will become more precise over time. We do not recommend designing programs that depend on citation-rate precision the tooling does not yet deliver.
