Star-Pattern Linking
An outbound linking structure in which a network of publications all link outward to a small set of canonical destinations.
Star-pattern linking is an outbound linking structure in which a network of publications all link outward to a small, stable set of canonical destinations, without linking laterally to each other. Originally an SEO pattern, increasingly relevant as an LLM-citation pattern, because answer engines reward distributed, non-coordinated references to a stable entity from many independent sources.
The practical advantage of the star pattern is that it produces a citation profile that looks like the citation profile of a well-resolved real-world entity — many independent sources referencing the same canonical home — rather than the citation profile of a coordinated network attempting to game ranking. Knowledge graphs and answer-engine grounding behaviors increasingly distinguish the two. The star pattern is closer to the legitimate version.
The pattern is sometimes confused with PBN (private blog network) tactics, which it is not. PBN tactics produce lateral interlinking within a coordinated set of sites, with the goal of passing link equity to a target. Star-pattern linking explicitly avoids lateral interlinking and explicitly references a canonical home; the goal is entity establishment, not link equity flow. The two are technically and operationally distinct. Most modern search and answer engines reward the former and penalize the latter once detected.
