Generative marketing was the first wave of AI marketing — the wave characterized by single-model generation of assets, copy, creative, and a steady output of derivative content of varying quality. It is now widely considered a stepping stone toward agentic marketing, in which the unit of value is the coordinated workflow rather than the single generation.

The defining feature of the generative-marketing era was that the leverage came from the model itself. A team that adopted a frontier model in 2023 had an edge over a team that had not. A team that wrote a better prompt had an edge over a team that wrote a worse prompt. The unit of competitive advantage was small, atomic, and individually accessible — which is why so many programs in this era looked impressive in isolation and produced disappointing results at scale.

The shift to agentic marketing is partly about the field's maturation — workflows, memory, handoffs, review surfaces — and partly about the fact that the model layer has commoditized. Frontier capabilities are now broadly accessible. The leverage has migrated up the stack to the workflow and the workforce. Programs that are still operating in a pure generative posture in 2026 are usually either small enough that the workflow layer does not yet pay off, or they are running on inertia from earlier wins. We cover both kinds without judgment, and we note when the inertia is starting to cost the team something measurable.
