Credit-based pricing is a commercial model in which platform usage is metered in credits — abstract units that correspond to underlying compute, agent activity, or workflow runs — rather than in per-user seats. The model has become common for AI marketing tooling because seat-based pricing penalizes the agentic-workforce pattern, in which a single human operator may drive a great deal of agent activity, and rewards the legacy SaaS pattern of one human per seat.

The practical buyer questions for any credit-based pricing model are: what does one credit actually buy at the workload that matters; how volatile is the credit cost of a typical workflow run; how predictable is monthly burn for the realistic operating shape of the buying organization; and what are the terms when actual usage exceeds the committed credit envelope. Mature credit-based platforms answer these questions cleanly in writing. Immature ones produce surprise invoices.

Marketleaf covers credit-based pricing as a category. We have a working position that for buyers operating an agentic-workforce posture, credit-based pricing is structurally more honest than seat-based pricing — the metric being charged for is closer to the metric that drives value. We also have a working position that the implementation matters enormously, and that several platforms have shipped credit models in 2025 and 2026 with rough edges that buyers should evaluate carefully before committing.
