A card-based UI is a surface design in which agent output is rendered as a sequence of structured, click-to-respond cards rather than as a continuous chat stream. Each card represents a discrete unit of work the agentic system has produced — a draft, an approval request, a clarifying question, a decision to commit. The human operator reviews each card on its own terms, with a clearly defined set of responses.

The pattern reduces cognitive load on the operator in a way the chat surface does not. A chat stream forces the operator to maintain the conversational state in their head, to remember what was asked, to remember what was already answered. A card surface externalizes the state. Each card is its own atomic decision. The operator can review at their own pace, defer cards, batch responses to similar cards, and move through the queue without the conversational pressure that chat surfaces impose.

We have come to think of card-based UI as the dominant correct pattern for serious agentic-marketing surfaces, and the chat-first pattern as the legacy artifact of an earlier era when the field was still extrapolating from the consumer chat experience. The serious systems we have covered in the last year have either moved to a card surface or are in the process of moving. The systems that have stayed chat-first have, in most cases, ended up with operators who feel like they are babysitting a colleague rather than steering a workforce.
