Marketleaf Practical AI marketing intelligence for in-house teams and small agencies.
Issue 1 · Vol. 1 · Est. 2026 The AI marketing trade, weekly.

Data hygiene is the discipline of keeping customer data, content data, and intent data clean enough that downstream systems — and in particular the agentic systems that increasingly consume this data — can do useful work with it. It is the single most under-budgeted line item in most AI marketing programs, and the single most common root cause when an agentic-marketing initiative produces output that looks fine in demo and ships poorly in production.

The practical components are familiar — deduplication, normalization, schema enforcement, lifecycle-stage hygiene, list management, content metadata, taxonomy maintenance — but the consequences of neglecting them have changed. In an earlier era, dirty data produced a less precise targeting decision and a less reliable dashboard. In the agentic era, dirty data produces an agent that confidently does the wrong thing at scale. The blast radius of a hygiene failure is materially larger than it used to be.

Marketleaf's editorial position is that data hygiene work is the most under-covered story in the AI marketing category, and the work that most consistently separates the programs that ship from the programs that announce. We try to cover it more than the natural appetite of the news cycle would suggest, on the principle that the boring stories that determine outcomes deserve more coverage than the loud stories that do not.
